Hydrangeas in Sunbury

New Season Hydrangeas Have Arrived — Fresh From Our Local Grower

There’s nothing quite like the first hydrangeas of the season. Grown just down the road and hand-picked for freshness, these beauties have landed in store at Ireland’s Florist — ready to brighten homes across Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges.

Why We Love Supporting Local Flower Farms

We’re passionate about partnering with local growers. It means fresher, longer-lasting blooms, fewer flower miles, and real support for the people who pour their heart into every stem. When you shop with us, you’re backing local families and our community — and we’re so thankful.

Why Hydrangeas Are Amazing

  • Generous, cloud-like blooms: One or two stems can fill a vase and make a statement.
  • Versatile style: Hydrangeas suit classic, coastal, cottage or modern interiors.
  • Colour story magic: Their hues range from icy whites to vibrant blues and romantic pinks — and they shift through the season.
  • Great value: Big heads = big impact, even in simple arrangements.

What Colours You’ll Find

Across the season you’ll see:

  • White & ivory — crisp, timeless and elegant.
  • Soft pinks — pretty and romantic.
  • Vivid pinks & magenta — bold and joyful.
  • Powder to electric blues — coastal, cool and calming.
  • Lilac & purple — lush and luxe.
  • Fresh lime & antique greens — especially in autumn - later in the season.

Note: Colour can vary by variety and growing conditions (including soil), so each market day brings its own little surprise.

How Hydrangea Colour Changes Through the Season

Early in the season, petals are soft and pastel. As summer warms up, colours often deepen and intensify. Later on, blooms can take on beautiful “antique” tones — think dusky pinks, mauves and sagey greens — with a slightly papery texture that looks amazing in relaxed, garden-style arrangements.

How Long Hydrangeas Are in Season

Locally grown hydrangeas typically run from late spring through summer (roughly November in to Autumn in Victoria), with availability and colours shifting as the season progresses. Some weeks they fly out the door — so get them while you can!

How to Care for Cut Hydrangeas at Home

1) Prep your vase

  • Start with a squeaky-clean vase and fresh tap water.

2) Trim & tidy

  • Re-cut stems on a 45° angle with sharp secateurs every few days.
  • Remove leaves below the waterline (leaves drink a lot and can dirty the water).

3) Hydration boost (optional but brilliant)

  • If blooms seem a little thirsty, submerge the flower heads in a sink or tub of cool water for 20–30 minutes to rehydrate the petals.
  • You can also lightly mist the heads daily — hydrangeas drink through their petals as well as their stems.

4) Placement

  • Keep away from heater ducts and vents.
  • Top up the water daily (hydrangeas are thirsty!) and refresh fully every 1–2 days.

5) Quick revive tip

  • If a stem droops, give it a fresh cut and stand it in cool water for an hour in a cool spot. Many perk right back up.
